#MakeTaxFair – Get Politicians to ...

Here’s the idea - We clamp down on corporate tax dodgers, and we make them pay their fair share of tax. This would make the poorest countries £160 billion better off and would also provide an extra £3.6 billion to the UK Government, which would be spent on poverty reduction in the UK. It’s a brilliant campaign, simple and focussed on getting politicians (who want our vote in May), to commit to passing the Bill within 100 days of a new Government. A whole group of NGO’s (Non-Government Organisations) have got together to promote the campaign,...

Dodgy Tax Tour of St Albans...

Thanks to all our intrepid tourists who turned out for the tour on Saturday. It was a beautiful day for the tour, and we visited Barclays, Vodafone, Starbucks, Top Shop, Tesco’s and Boot’s. (We are not suggesting these companies are doing anything illegal, but we are saying that what they are doing is wrong!) There are a few more companies that we may add for next time! Please don’t forget that St Albans Council is debating the ‘Towns Against Tax Dodging’motion this evening at 7pm. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1...

St Albans Against Tax Dodging...

This coming Wednesday St Albans Council will debate a motion as to whether or not they will support St Albans ‘Towns Against Tax Dodging’ campaign. Just Community has been working with other local campaigners, running a ‘Dodgy Tax Tour’ to highlight the issue, and are calling on the council to show their support by backing the campaign, part of a national initiative by the charity ActionAid. While many ordinary people in the UK are experiencing hardship and rising costs, some multinational companies are avoiding billions of pounds of tax from a system...

St Albans – Dodgy Tax Tour –...

Ending poverty is a huge task. That’s why we tackle the big issues that keep poor countries poor! Tax dodging, unfair debt repayments, corporate abuse and unfair trade rules create a global economic system that tips the scales against the world’s poorest people. Developing countries lose more to tax dodging than they receive in aid each year. This is enough extra money to: Stop AIDS in its tracks AND Give a basic education to the 72 million kids that currently miss out AND End Hunger. Twice. St Albans council has to juggle resources to pay for essential...

Econowhat? Tuesday 10th September 8pm Th...

The financial crisis has rocked the global economy, and perceptions of how the economy should work. Those who are passionate about global justice know that the economic system lies at the root of poverty and inequality around the world. But grappling with economic arguments around debt, austerity and finance can be a real challenge. Jargon can seem complex, and it can be difficult to know where to go to get informed about the issues. That’s why we have decided to run Econowhat?, a new reading/viewing group. We’ve collected some of the best short articles, chapters &...

Econowhat? Tuesday 6th March 8pm The Goa...

We have been looking into the idea of running something like a Resilience Circles for a while. This is a small group of 10 – 20 people that comes together to increase personal security during these challenging times. Circles have three purposes: learning, mutual aid, and social action. Next, a group of organisations have teamed up to present a learning or reading club, which we thought was a good idea, and would start us on the way. So we are running Econowhat? to start to educate ourselves, and we’ll let the mutual aid and social action happen as our enthusiam increases! Our...

Tax Justice Bus Tour – St Albans...

We had a fabulous response to our hosting of the Tax Justice Bus tour, with Church Action on Poverty, Christian Aid and Jubilee Debt Campaign. The Tax Justice Bus rolled into the region last month as part of its epic 53-day tour around the UK. The tour, organised by Christian Aid and Church Action on Poverty, aimed to highlight the injustice of global tax dodging in the UK and beyond. September 20th 2012 saw the bus arriving in St Albans to be hosted at the Vineyard Church, at Brick Knoll Road. Savior Mwambwa (Centre for Trade Policy and Development in Zambia),...

People Get Ready!...

Dear friends, People of faith, people of hope and love! Do you want to see our nation transformed? Then lets talk! I believe that we have entered a defining phase in our history. Over the past two or three decades we have seen the gap between rich and poor increase at a rate faster than it ever has before. Not just between the richest and poorest countries, but now more evident within the richest countries. Globalisation has changed global societies, so no longer are there ‘rich countries’ and ‘poor countries’ but now a globalised elite and everybody else (the...

Urgent Action for Tax Justice…Then Get...

In the last few days it has leaked out that the UK Government is intending to open a new tax loophole to encourage greater use of tax havens and announce it in the budget! This is likely to cost the poorest countries around £4 Billion every year, and it will also cost UK taxpayers around £1 Billion every year. Its another tax dodge, paid for by the poorest in society to help the richest. We have been campaigning for the Government to bring more justice and fairness into the economy. Instead of listening to us, and bringing in strong regulation, instead of ignoring...

Just Community Meeting Dates – Ins...

What would a new economy look like, one based on justice, values and fairness, created for the people and not for the lenders? As we in Just Community and the Churches debate and help shape what our new economy should look like, what lessons can we learn from the present and broken system? This is one amazing film, come and watch this film, and help build community with us! From Academy Award® nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson (“No End In Sight”), comes INSIDE JOB, the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global...
